Lasya

Lasya is a style of dance closely associated with the goddess Parvati. In the very broadest terms, any dance with shringar (adornments) is considered to be lasya. Kathakali, Bharatnatyam, Manipuri, Kathak, and other dances are all derived from lasya. It is a graceful and beautiful style in which emotions are shown with eye and head movements.

In Kathak, all kavita todas are lasya, as they include dress finery, sexual passion, and love. Lasya may be performed by men or women, but because it is seen as a sign of beauty and grace, it is deemed more suitable for women.

Legend

According to legend, Parvati taught lasya to Banasur's daughter, Usha. Usha, in turn, taught it to the women of Dwarka, and from there it spread throughout India.
