Thumri in Dance
While the word 'thumri' generally refers to a style of music, it is also used in dance to describe a composition which is explored and interpreted through facial expressions and limited movement, often in a seated position. The topic of a thumri is usually romantic and devotional, and centers around a girl's love for Krishna. Bindadin Maharaj was a master of the genre and his thumri are a very famous and important part of the Lucknow gharana. Thumri are seldom allowed in professional Kathak competitions as they represent more of the theater arts rather than pure Kathak dance.
