Happy Teej!

The women of Nepal are thronging Pashupatinath Temple in Kathmandu and their natal village homes to celebrate a unique festival which takes places each year in the month of Bhadau. Resplendent in their red saris, sindoor powder, glass bangles, and tilhari necklaces women sing and dance and perform cultural programs. The festival begins lasts for five days and includes prayer, fasting, puja, nightly vigils, and ritual bathing. You can see more here:

International Dance Day 2016

April 29 is International Dance Day, the global celebration of poetic movement, rhythmic motion, and expressive artistry. No matter what the style, dance – like music – is a language of imagination, universally understood and appreciated. So put on your best shoes (or take them off!) and let the music and your inner fantasy take you wherever they may. Happy Dancing!!

Vajrayogini Dance at the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum

Senior dancer, Tasherit Sturm Dahal, will be performing the Vajrayogini dance, a charya nritya, or meditative Buddhist dance, as part of Kites of Asia, a free family program at the Smithsonian’s National Air & Space Museum this Saturday from 10:30-3 pm. The Vajrayogini is a rare and beautiful dance in which the qualities of a dakini, or spiritual muse, are personified and in which the dancer ‘becomes’ the being she portrays. Kites of Asia will also feature other dance and music performances by Utpalasia, along with workshops and activities for children of all ages. For more info, go to

Utpalasia at The University of Heidelberg, Germany

The second part of our summer in Europe was spent at the University of Heidelberg’s Southeast Asia Institute attending the Intensive Nepali program. Our thanks, appreciation, and respect to Professor Laxmi Nath Shrestha who made this session truly extraordinary. His devotion to the study of the Nepali language was absolutely inspiring!

In addition to participating in this rigorous program, and in keeping with our commitment to South Asian arts, Utpalasia was delighted to donate instruction in Himalayan folk dance afterhours to all those interested. Ladies, your performance was the hit of the certificate presentation ceremony and you rocked the house! Go girls!!

We are hoping to bring an expanded version of this cultural feature to SAI again in the future and are working on a proposal for traditional dance and music to be offered for upcoming summer sessions.
